‘Please Be Respectful’: TBATE Author TurtleMe Comments on Anime Criticism

As The Beginning After the End (TBATE) anime enters its third week, criticism has ramped up over the show’s animation quality. Things have gotten so intense that a petition has been circulating online calling for the anime’s cancellation. In response to the growing backlash, TBATE author TurtleMe made a post on Reddit, addressing the anime situation and everything else head-on.

“Things have gotten… loud, for lack of a better word,” he wrote. “And I sincerely was touched by the heartfelt messages I’ve received.”

He acknowledged the creative challenges that come with adapting TBATE into an anime, especially as someone used to full control over his work as the novel’s author.

“In the anime industry, it’s very rare for the creator to have a say in deciding the ins and outs when it comes to the inception of an anime. This was a growing point for me since I was so used to having control over everything regarding The Beginning After the End.”

Despite the limitations, TurtleMe made it clear that he believes in the effort being put in by the team behind the anime, including Studio A-Cat and Crunchyroll. “As the author of TBATE, one who has spent 10 years writing almost 2 million words of this story, I hope you’ll believe me when I say that I want nothing but the best for this story.”

We previously had a chance to interview TurtleMe, and he told us that Crunchyroll has been ‘instrumental in bridging the creative vision with global reach.’

“There will always be creative differences in the room, but I really do believe that everyone is coming at it with their best effort and intentions.”

He also addressed the emotional weight of seeing something so personal become a collaborative project. “But as with anything you love–whether it’s your pet, your story, or even your child–when faced with challenges, you don’t wish for it to be gone and have a do-over. You support it through difficult times and push it up so that it can become something that you can cherish because of all of the trials and tribulations you’ve overcome together.”

TurtleMe didn’t ask fans to pretend everything’s perfect or even to like it, but he urged the community to stay respectful. “I’m not asking you to like something you don’t, but please be respectful and set an example in the vast ocean that is the internet.”

He closed the post by reaffirming his commitment to the story and to the people who’ve supported it from the beginning. He also confirmed he’ll still be attending Sakura-Con, where he plans to share a “small special announcement” with fans in person.
